He is
54 VA VA VA and Gertrude E. Hill his wife of 24 years is 45 VA. He is a son of
William F. Putman and Eva Virginia Anderson of Shenandoah County in 1880. In
1900 the family was in Frederick County, Maryland. They were in Clarke County,
Virginia in 1910. He is a finisher in a hosiery factory.
He is
48 VA VA VA and is a laborer for the City. Bertha May Andrews his wife of some
22 years is 38 VA and they have Herman W. 18 VA, Raymond G. 16 VA and Roy F. 10
VA. They had another son Tyndall who is married here in town now. He is a son
of William Robert Putman and Ruth Ann Steed from Warren County, Virginia. They
were there in 1910 and in Shenandoah County, Virginia in 1920. The son Herman
William will marry Rose Luella Barrick in Martinsburg August 24, 1935. The son
Roy Franklin will marry Madeline Naomi Thomas also in Martinsburg on June 4,
1945. Anyway, he will die here April 28, 1938. In 1940 Bertha is married to
Harry Snapp here. Don’t know if they divorced first or if she married Harry
right after William died.
He is
21 VA VA VA and works in a brickyard. Bessie his wife is 28 WV. They have been
married a year, but she was married before and has Forest Johnson 8 WV. Tyndall
is a son of the above William F. and Bertha Putman. They are divorced and
Bessie is here in 1940 with Forest and a daughter Shirley Fay who is 4 WV then.
She is
66 VA VA VA and widowed. She is listed as an aunt of Charles and Mary Watters.
She is a daughter of Smith R. Putman and Mary Louisa Andrews from Warren County
Virginia. Her sister Mary Elizabeth had married Callie Waters December 15,
1884. She died there on October 12, 1905. He then married Mollie. I don’t know
Mollie’s last name, but Callie’s full name is Calvin Jacob Waters. Charles is
his son. They are in Jefferson County in 1940.
He is
38 WV WV WV still single, boarding and unemployed. He has been here most all
his life. He is Marshall Fletcher Putnam, a son of James Putnam and Sarah
Catherine Dully from Braxton County. He will finally marry Lori Vena Cottrill
April 27, 1932 at age 40. She is 23 then and they will have 6 kids up through
Kenneth in 1950. They are here with the first two kids in 1940.Fletcher was
born April 2, 1892 and will die here October 10, 1966.
He is
51 WV WV WV and works in a paper mill. Lucy Ellen Dunlap his wife is 50 WV.
They have been married 27 years. Still at home are Homer D. 25 WV, Roy L. 18
WV, William Day 15 WV, Shirley F. and Burley F. twins who are 12 WV, and Clyde
M. 11 WV. John Monroe is a son of James Putman and Sarah Dully. He was born June
13, 1879. He married Lucy Ellen Dunlap here on August 16, 1903. In 1910 and
1920 they were here and his widowed mother was with him in both of these
reports. They will be moving soon across the River into Jefferson County, Ohio.
He died in East Liverpool, Ohio on September 6, 1960.
She is
42 WV WV WV and a farmer. She lists herself as being single as she always has,
but still has several of her kids with her. Durwood or Durward is 19 WV, Zilla 15
WV and Beulah 13 WV. They are all listed as her children. The names change each
census report. She just decided to have a family without an official father.
She is a daughter of James Putman and Sarah Dully. She was born May 28, 1887
and will die here July 18, 1947. Don’t know about the daddy or daddies. Lucy
was living with Charles Remley Bourne as a servant in 1910 and 1920 and he may
have been dad to the kids, not sure. Charles had a wife Ida in both those
years. Anyway, Durward will marry Sarah Kerns here August 17, 1932.
He is
74 WV WV WV single and boarding. Very interesting. He sure looks like John
Joseph Putman the son of James Putman and Lovinia Stull from Gilmer County.
That guy ran away from home in 1867 and went to Arizona. He is listed back
there now and will die there in 1932. But, I can’t
figure any other guy that fits this one. I have him being buried out in
Arizona, but there is a gravestone in Gilmer County for a Joseph Putman
1850-1932. Interesting. No other Josephs around back then.
He is
20 WV WV WV and a prisoner at the Braxton County Jail. He is a son of Lucy
Putman and is also listed with her in Birch.
He is
22 WV WV WV and works on a farm. Lucy Ann Lipscomb his wife is 22 WV. He is a
son of William Henry Putman and Cora Skinner from Grant, Doddridge County. He
and Lucy were just married here July 25, 1929. He was born February 11, 1907.
He will die in Parkersburg, Wood County West Virginia on January 13, 1964. Lucy
Ann was born in 1907 and will die in Parkersburg in 1992. They are here in
1940.
He is
54 WV WV WV and is a laborer. Cora Skinner his wife is 44 WV. At home still are
Kathryn 19 WV, Woodrow 17 WV, Mildred 15 WV, Gertrude 11 WV, Paul 9 WV and
Betty 6 WV. They had another daughter Naomi in 1927 but she must have died or
something. He is a son of Samuel and Margaret Putnam from Doddridge County West
Virginia. He was single in Taylor County in 1900. He was born September 12,
1875, and died March 22, 1948. He married Cora Clara Skinner in Reynoldsville,
Harrison County West Virginia on January 29, 1903. She was born July 22, 1885
and died December 19, 1948. They will be here in 1920 and 1930 and I am sure
longer. New England family out of Bath County Virginia. The son Dareld Paul
will marry Dora Belle Barker in Harrison County on February 19, 1946. Betty Ann
will marry Wilbert James Scheuvront here on August 8, 1946.

57 WV WV WV and a farm laborer. Maud Lillian Youst his wife is 47 WV, Jason C.
16 WV, Duard B. 14 WV, Orpha J. 12 WV, Nettie G. 10 WV and Virginia M. 4 1/12
WV. He is a son of John Putman and Sarah Messenger from here. He was born
September 20, 1873. Maude was born September 1883. They were married here April
18, 1899. They have been here all their lives. Southern Putman family from
Virginia.
She is
7 WV WV WV and is living with her mother Opal 22 WV and her stepfather Coy
Richards 29 WV. Her full name is Gladys Geneva Putnam and she was born August
4, 1922. Her birth record says her folks were Roy Putnam and Opal Parsons.
Gladys will marry Lane Roberts in Calhoun County West Virginia July 20, 1940.
She then lists her parents as Oval and Opel Richards. Back to her dad, He was a
son of Charles Putnam and Maude Youst from Gilmer County. I don’t have a record
of him marrying Opal. He did marry Charlotte Wilson here in 1926 and they are
over in Wood County now. I would guess Roy married Opal around 1920 and
divorced or Gladys was ‘out of wedlock.’
He is
39 WV WV WV and is a general farmer. Bertha M. Conrad his wife is 43 WV and
they have Hadsyl a son 12 WV, Lester 10 and Robert 3 3/12 WV. He was born
October 4, 1890 and will die in June 1981. He and Bertha were married April 29,
1917. The son Hadsyl will marry Oleta Muriel Beckett November 9, 1940 in Gilmer
County and later Patty Jane Ratliff in Gilmer County on July 4, 1968.
He is
now 84 WV WV WV and still running a farm. Sarah M. Messenger his wife is 75 WV.
Their married daughter Nora R. 51 WV and her husband Jefferson Keller. He is a
son of John Putnam and Sophia Creel from Fauquier County Virginia. He was born
September 17, 1845. He married Sarah here on October 3, 1872. Sarah was born in
Gilmer County on January 10, 1854 and died September 13, 1940. They were in
Webster County in 1880 and here ever since. John will die here July 13, 1932,
and Sarah September 13, 1940. Southern Putman Line.

30 WV WV WV and single. She is a housekeeper for a Moore family. She is a
daughter of Charles and Maude Putman from Center.
He is
45VA VA VA and an engineer. His wife Orpha May Selman is 20 WV and they have a
daughter Ercel Jean 4 1/12 WV, Paul Russell 2 2/12 WV and Ruth V. 5/12 WV. He
was married to Grace Griffin in 1910 in Alleghany County Virginia and then was
with her here in 1920. Orpha is a new wife. He married her here June 9, 1925
when she was barely 16 years old. He is a son of John Henry Putnam and
Elizabeth Oiler from Bath County Virginia. New England line. The daughter Velma
Ruth will marry Harold Bert Ritter here August 21, 1948. The daughter Ercel
Jean will marry David Eugene Shaffer here June 17, 1941.
She is
29 NC NC NC single and boarding. She is a public school teacher. The name may
be Laurin. Either way, can’t find her in the Carolinas.
He is
33 MA NH NH and a chemist at a chemical plant. Mary Jewell Allen his wife of 6
years is 30 ME. He is a son of Clarence Leroy Putnam and Ellen Corey. He was
born in Newburyport, Mass. Then his mother remarried and moved to Kittery,
Maine by 1910 and then he was back in Newburyport in 1920. He’ll be here
forever now. He was born May 28, 1896 and will die here in October 1978. There
is a marriage certificate of Wallace Joseph marrying Mildred Lucille Kramer
here in 1960.
He is
45 SC SC SC and is an electrical engineer. Inez Lorenzo his wife is 51 LA. They
have been married 20 years, and have Ethel L. 17 TN and William A. 13 TN. Her
single sister Dorothy Lozano 36 LA is with them. He is a son of William Abner
Putman and Nancy Boyd from Laurens County South Carolina. He was home there in
1900. They were here in 1920 and are here by themselves in 1940.
He is
23 NY US US and is an inmate at the Weston State Hospital. He looks to be the
son of Irving Putman and Robina Fowlds from Johnstown, Fulton County New York.

FRED R. (ROACHES) PUTNAM Logan, Logan County
He is 29 NC NC NC and his wife Frances Shelton is 20 WV. They live with her folks John and Beatrice Shelton. He is a blacksmith for the C&O steam railway. They are here in 1940 and have a son Fred Richard. He is a son of John Samuel Putman and Laura Agnes Hux and was born in April 1899 in Gaston County North Carolina. His dad deserted his mom and he was with her in 1920 in Edgecombe County North Carolina. He married Frances November 25, 1928 in Peach Creek, Logan County. He was married twice, once to Frances and once to Rhoda. Not sure of the order.
He is
26 WV VA VA and is a traffic manager at a domestic coke (coal) plant. Margaret
Printz Damilon his wife is 24 WV. They have been married 5 years and have Mary
Lou 4 WV and James R. 2 WV. They will separate shortly and then get divorced in
1947. He and Nadine from here are married in Chicago in 1940. Then he will then
marry Maxine Day and later marry Mary Lillian Jones in Maryland October 10,
1959. He is a son of Robert William Putnam and Lula Accord. He was born here,
but the folks were originally from Bath County Virginia. He will die in
Baltimore, Maryland June 18, 1977.
He is 27 NC NC NC and a motorman in a coalmine. Susan Vance his wife is 24 WV and they have Ruby 6 WV, Carl 4 8/12 WV and Billy 11/12 WV. He was single here in 1920. He was born June 14, 1903 in Mitchell County North Carolina. He is an illegit kid whose dad was Augustus Merriman Putman and his mom was Ellen Elizabeth Gilley from Mitchell County. She was some 30 years younger than Guss who was kinda playing around. Lizzy then married Linville ‘Len’ Sheets October 23, 1905 and they raised Arthur back there. He married Sue here on November 14, 1922. Sue is a daughter of Marion Vance and Rebecca Tiller and was born here in McDowell County July 12, 1906. Arthur will die in Ashville, Buncombe County North Carolina September 26, 1945. After Arthur dies, she will marry Tom Rhyne in Mitchell County November 16, 1957. Sue will die in Mitchell County North Carolina March 22, 1989. From his obituary, the son Carl Arthur Putman was born in Yukon, West Virginia June 14, 1925 and will die in Flagler Beach, Florida Sunday October 30, 2011. He married Geneva Duncan. The daughter Ruby Pearl was born July 16, 1923 and will marry a Frye and die in Ashville, North Carolina January 1, 1987. The son Billy was born here June 20, 1929 and will marry a Boone girl. He will die June 24, 2007 in Spruce Pine, Mitchell County North Carolina.

been married 17 years and were here in 1920. They have Harold 16 WV, Elsie 14
WV, Merle 13 WV, Flossie 11 WV, Garnet 10 WV, Hubert 8 WV, Herbert 7 WV, Cora 3
6/12 WV, Bernard 7/12 WV. Also here are his sister Flora 43 WV and still
single, and Eliza’s widowed mother Rebecca Dunlap 57 WV. Rebecca was with them
in 1920 as well. He is James Letcher Putnam a son of James Putnam and Sarah
Catherine Dully from Braxton County.
He is
59 PA ENG SCOT and is a bookkeeper in a poolroom. Minnie Lubbe his wife is 59
OH. They were married here in 1893 and have been married for 37 years now. They
have Charles 35 WV, Howard 31 PA and Mildred 20 WV still at home. Charles is a
blacksmith just like Peter was up till now and like his dad was back in
Pittsburgh. He is a son of Charles and Christina Putnam. He was born in
Pittsburgh July 4, 1871 and was home there in 1880, and here in 1900 and on.
The son Charles will marry Ester Douglass here in 1936. He will die here April
6, 1940 and Minnie is alive at that time.
LOIEN T. (LOREN THOMAS)
PUTMAN Beckley, Raleigh County
He is a
coal operator 43 MO MO MO, his wife Sarah Ann is 40 IL and they have Sarah Jane
10 MO and Mary Ann 2 WV. He is a son of Thomas Benton Putman and Mary Jane
Meyers from Greene County Missouri. He was born there in 1886 and was at home
in 1900. They were in Franklin County Illinois in 1910 and 1920 and he was a
supervisor in a coalmine. He is now listed as a coal operator. Guess he is a
manager or owner. The daughter Sarah Jane was born in St. Louis, Missouri
December 27, 1919. She will marry Charles Clifton Hinds here September 5, 1942.
The daughter Mary Ann was born here in Beckley January 5, 1928 and will marry
William Nave Turner here on September 29, 1950. Loren will die here February
17, 1967 and Sarah will die here October 28, 1968. Southern Putman family North

He is
now 80 VA VA VA as is his wife Agnes Keziah Rowe. He still operates his farm,
but has his son Orlando Alexander 54 VA to help. He is a son of Elizabeth
Putman from Bath County Virginia who never married but had a couple of sons.
Charles was born November 27, 1849 and will die here January 12, 1935. Agnes
was born April 27, 1849 and will die here in Grant on January 16, 1941.
He is
now 50 WV VA WV and has his own farm. Iva Stanley his wife is 43 WV. They were
married in 1904 and now have Lester (Oran Lester) 21 WV, Lillian 16 WV, Opal 13
WV, Enid 12 WV, Bethel 10 WV, Emeline 8 WV, Verdis 7 WV and Mureal 4 WV. Had 12
kids in all. His mother Jemima Heck Putnam 76 WV is with them. He is a son of
Alexander Fuller Putman and Jemima Heck from here. Alex was a son of Elizabeth
Putnam, Fuller Putnam's daughter from Bath County Virginia who never married.
Alexander married Jemima Heck July 21, 1878. They remained in Ritchie County
all their lives. New England line originally from Massachusetts.
He is 47 VA VA VA and a freight
conductor on the steam railway. Alta Hardmann his wife is 43 WV. Their two
daughters are married by now. He is a son of Charles Francisco Putnam and Agnes
Keziah Rowe. He was born back in Bath County Virginia and then was with his
folks in Ritchie County West Virginia by 1900. He was born February 7, 1883.
Alta was born January 1, 1887 and died Grafton WV in December 1972. They were
here in Taylor County in 1910 and probably in 1920 too. They are here in 1940.
He is
20 WV WV WV single and boarding. He was in Wirt County in 1920 with an uncle
Floyd Balangee, and was with his grandfather in Ritchie County in 1910. His dad
was Winfield Putnam who was a son of Charles Francisco Putman.
He is
30 WV WV WV. Lottie, Charlotte E. Wilson his wife, is 22 WV and they have Ruth
Carol 5/12 WV. His sister Geneva 18 WV is with them. He works at a factory. He
is a son of Charles L. and Maude Putnam from Gilmer County. He and his sister
were at home there in 1920. He married Lottie there January 24, 1926. He was
born February 1, 1900 and will die in June 1983.

64 VA VA VA and Gertrude E. Hill his wife of 24 years is 59 VA. He is a son of
William F. Putman and Eva Virginia Anderson of Shenandoah County in 1880. In
1900 the family was in Frederick County, Maryland. They were in Clarke County,
Virginia in 1910. He is a farmer now. In 1930 he worked in a hosiery factory.

BESSIE PUTMAN Martinsburg, Berkeley County
She is 38 WV and divorced. She has Wade Johnson 18 WV from her first marriage and Shirley Fay Putman 4 WV from her second. Bessie Lewis was married to Tyndall Putman in 1929 and they were here in 1930. They divorced about 1935-37. Tyndall is a son of William Frederick Putman and Bertha May Andrews. William was from Fauquier County Virginia and in Warren County in 1910, Shenandoah County in 1920 and here in Martinsburg in 1930. Southern Putmans.
HERMAN PUTNAM Martinsburg, Berkeley County
He is 28 VA and his wife Rose Luella Barrick is 30 WV and they have Suzanna 12 WV who is a daughter of Rose’s from her first marriage or maybe out of wedlock. Herman William Putman is a son of William Frederick Putman and Bertha Mae Andrews and was born in Shenandoah County January 23, 1912 and will die here in Martinsburg October 1, 1985. Rose is a daughter of Edward Kiles Barrick and Effie Estella Sheets and was born in Keyser, West Virginia August 15, 1909 and will die in Martinsburg September 4, 1989. They were married August 24, 1935. He is a cement packer in a stone quarry. Southern Putman family from Warren County Virginia.
ROY PUTMAN Mill Creek, Berkeley County
He is 20 VA single and living with his remarried mother Bertha Snapp 52 VA and his stepfather Harry Snapp 65 WV. Bertha May Andrews had been married to William Frederick Putman for some 25 years they were in Shenandoah County Virginia in 1920 and here in Martinsburg in 1930. Bill died here April 28, 1938 and she married Harry. Southern Putman family.
He is 30 WV, his wife Sarah Kerns is 34 WV and they have Delano 7 WV, Isetta 5 WV and Harvey 3 WV. His mom is Lucy Putman a daughter of James Putman and Sarah Dully. She was born May 28, 1887 and will die here July 18, 1947. She never married but had 3 kids and lived with Charles Remley Bourne and he may have been the daddy. Charles was married to an Ida so not sure what went wrong. Southern Putmans from Fauquier and then Warren County Virginia.
EVERETT PUTMAN Birch, Braxton County
He is 37 WV, his wife Louvinia 21 WV and his mom Flora is 59 WV. Israel Everett is a son of Flora Putman and was born out of wedlock like several others in the family of John Monroe Putman and Lucy Ellen Dunlap. John will move over to Ohio. Flora will die here February 25, 1943. Then as to Israel Everett. He was born in Braxton County October 28, 1902 and will die in Gassaway, Braxton County February 7, 1967. He married Louvina Jane Dobbins April 9, 1939. She is a daughter of Albert Walker Dobbins and Sarah Shock. She was born in Gilmer County West Virginia October 4, 1918 and will die in Barbour County West Virginia March 16, 1970.

47 WV WV WV still unemployed. His wife Lori Cottrell is 27 WV and they have
Wetzel 4 WV and Van 1 WV. He has been single here most all his life. He is
Marshall Fletcher Putnam, a son of James Putnam and Sarah Catherine Dully from
Braxton County. He finally married Lori Vena Cottrill August 6, 1932 at age 40.
She was 23 then and they will have 6 kids up through 1950. Fletcher was born April
2, 1892 and will die here October 10, 1966. Lori was born February 7, 1913 and will die in

JAMES L. (LETCHER) PUTNAM Birch, Braxton County
He is
48 WV WV WV and a laborer for the W.P.A. Eliza Jane Dunlap his wife is 43 WV.
They have been married 27 years and were in Nicholas County in 1920 and 1930.
They have Merle L. 23 WV, Flossie Mae 21 WV, Garnet 20 WV, Hubert 19 WV, Robert
17 WV, Cora 15 WV, Herbert 13 WV, Bernard 11 WV, Gertrude 9 WV, Norman 8 WV and
Edward 5 WV. Also here is Eliza’s widowed mother Rebecca Ann Dunlap 65 WV.
Rebecca was with them in 1920 and 1930 as well. He is James Letcher Putnam a
son of James Putnam and Sarah Catherine Dully from Braxton County. He is a twin
of Martin Fletcher here in town. He was born April 2, 1892 and married Eliza
December 9, 1912. He died in the Massillon State
Hospital in Stark County Ohio in 1966. Eliza was born in Braxton County May 7,
1897 and died in Trumbull County Ohio July 12, 1975.
She is
52 WV WV WV and a farmer. She has her married daughter Zella Villia Reeder 33
WV and husband Harold Reeder 33 WV and 3 kids with her. She has never been
married but has had 4 kids, including Zella, over the years. She is a daughter
of James Putman and his second wife Sarah Catherine Dully. She was born here
May 28, 1887 and will die here July 18, 1947. Zella was born in 1915 and
married Harold Reeder August 5, 1932. Southern Putmans out of Fauquier and
Warren Counties in Virginia.

son of William Henry Putman and Cora Skinner from Grant, Doddridge County. He
and Lucy were just married here July 25, 1929. He was born February 11, 1907.
He will die in Parkersburg, Wood County West Virginia on January 13, 1964. Lucy
Ann is a daughter of Elijah and Samantha Lipscomb and was born August 16, 1908,
and will die in Parkersburg April 16, 1992. This is part of the New England
family of John Putnam who came down to Bath County Virginia in the Revolution
and stayed there.

WV, Betty 16 WV and Edward 4 WV. He is a son of Samuel and Margaret Putnam from
Doddridge County West Virginia. He was single in Taylor County in 1900. He was
born September 12, 1875, and will die March 22, 1948. He married Cora Clara
Skinner in Reynoldsville, Harrison County West Virginia on January 29, 1903.
She was born July 22, 1885 and will die here December 19, 1948. They were here
in 1910, 1920 and 1930. New England family out of Bath County Virginia. The son
Paul will marry Dora Belle Barker in Harrison County on February 19, 1946.
Betty Ann will marry Wilbert James Scheuvront here on August 8, 1946.
WOODROW PUTMAN Grant, Doddridge County
He is 28 WV and his wife Mary Margaret Clem is 26 WV and they have Jackie Eugene 7 WV, Thelma Louise 5 WV, Edith 2 WV and Jimmy just born WV. They will have 6 more kids. Woodrow Wilson Putman is a son of the above William Henry and Cora. He has been at home and still is living either with his folks or on the same property. He is a road construction laborer like his dad. He was born here April 6, 1912 and will die in Hockingport, Athens County Ohio August 9, 1967. He married Mary in Harrison County March 24, 1932. Mary was born July 17, 1913 in Weston, Lewis County West Virginia and will die in Parkersburg, Wood County West Virginia February 15, 1988. New England line.

Kentucky August 25, 1939. Jason Charles Putnam is a son of the above Charles
and Maud Putnam. He was born here in Lockney, Gilmer County March 5, 1914, and
will die in Tucson, Arizona August 10, 1989. Estelle is a daughter of Noah
David Cogar and Ora Ethel Bosley and was born in Normantown, Gilmer County June
18, 1920 and will die in Tucson, Arizona November 12, 1992. They will have two
daughters in the early to mid 1940s. He is a farmer. They will head out to Arizona
and split up. He will marry Mabel Lewis there on December 8, 1950. Southern
Putmans out of Virginia.

Virginia. He was born September 17, 1845. Sarah is a daughter of Henry Manville
Messenger and Sarah Ann Keith. She was born in Gilmer County October 10, 1854

Orpha were married here June 9, 1925. She was a daughter of George and Alona Selman. They were

Frances is a daughter of Smith R. Putman and Mary Louisa Andrews from Warren
County Virginia. Her sister Mary Elizabeth had married Callie Waters December
15, 1884. Mary died there on October 12, 1905. He then married Mollie. I don’t
know Mollie’s last name, but Callieճ full name is Calvin Jacob Waters. Frances
was living with them from 1910 on. In 1930 Frances is with the Watters in
Berkley County West Virginia in 1930, and now here with their son Charles.

Lucy Allen 75 ME. He is a son of Clarence Leroy Putnam and Ellen Corey. He was
born in Newburyport, Massachusetts. Then his mother remarried and moved to
Kittery, Maine by 1910 and then he was back in Newburyport in 1920. Heլl be here
forever now. He was born May 28, 1896 and will die here in October 1978. Mary
was a daughter of Henry Winchester Allen and Lucy Larabee Conant and was born
in Brunswick, Maine and will die here in Charleston September 16, 1958. They
didnմ have any children. There is a marriage certificate of Wallace Joseph
marrying Mildred Lucille Kramer here in 1960. I assume she was his second wife,
but I have no other info on her. He was a sergeant in the U.S. Army at some
point, probably WWI.

12 WV and listed as a great grandson of S. M. Stock a female 91 WV. Also there is her son in law James Damilon 72 VA who would
be Jimmy’s grandfather. His father was Robert Bertie Putnam and his mom
Margaret Printz Damilon. Jimmy was with them in Union, Marion County West
Virginia in 1930 at age 2. The folks separated in the 1930s and will get
divorced ‘officially’ in 1947. Robert is a son of Robert William Putman and
Lula Accord. He was born in Marion County, but the folks were originally from
Bath County Virginia. New England line out of Massachusetts way back when.

He is 39 NC, his wife Frances Shelton 29 WV and they have Fred Richard 9 WV. He is an engine supply man for the C & O Railway. They were here in 1930 and living with her folks then. He is a son of John Samuel Putman and Laura Agnes Hux and was born in April 1899 in Gaston County North Carolina. His dad deserted his mom and he was with her in 1920 in Edgecombe County North Carolina. He married Frances November 25, 1928 in Peach Creek, Logan County. He was married twice, once to Frances and once to Rhoda. Not sure of the order.

here, and was born here in Fairmont October 7, 1907 and will die here May 7,
1991. This is part of the New England line that came down to Bath County

Gay Putnam is a son of Winfield Vance Putnam and his first wife Minnie Shelton
from Bath County Virginia. Len was born February 8, 1901 and will die here
September 9, 1974. He married
Nellie Merle Price in Marion County October 19, 1922. She was a daughter of Isaias
Wesley Price and Zana Belle Hughes and was born in Lyon, Preston County West

draught man in a mining operation. Just moved here. And yes, spelling is
correct. Robert Anthony Puttman is a son of Anthony Puttman and Henrietta
Rifkin and was born in Cincinnati, Ohio January 17, 1914 and will later die in
the University Hospital in Cincinnati March 3, 1975. His wife Helen Virginia
McCabe is a daughter of Ross McCabe and Alma Rockwell and was born in
Cincinnati April 6, 1914 and will die there but I don’t know the date. His dad
and mom ran a grocery store in Cincinnati started by his grandfather John
Puttnam. His dad Anthony died recently and his mom is moving to Washington to
work for the Government there. Family came from Prussia to Cincinnati in the
1840s.

Thomas Benton Putman and Mary Jane Meyers from Greene County Missouri. He was
born there August 22 1886 and was at home in 1900. They were in Franklin County
Illinois in 1910 and 1920 and he was a supervisor in a coalmine. They were here
in Beckley in 1930 and he was listed as a coal operator. He is now a general
manager of several coalmines. The daughter Sarah Jane was born in St. Louis,
Missouri December 27, 1919. She will marry Charles Clifton Hinds here September
5, 1942. The daughter Mary Ann was born here in Beckley January 5, 1928 and
will marry William Nave Turner here on September 29, 1950. Loren will die here
February 17, 1967 and Sarah will die here October 28, 1968. Southern Putman

married in 1904 and now have Opal 23 WV, Enid 22 WV, Ernestine 18 WV, a

Sprang 3 OH. His long widowed mom Jemima is still with them and is now 86 WV.
They had 12 kids in all. He is a son of Alexander Fuller Putman and Jemima Heck
from here. Alex was a son of Elizabeth Putnam, Fuller Putnam's daughter from
Bath County Virginia who never married. Alexander married Jemima Heck July 21,

He is 25 VA, his wife Dorothy Virginia Crone is 28 WV and they have David 7 VA, Joseph 5 OH and Mary Ann 3 WV. They live with her folks Harry H. and Lucy Crone. He is Edgar Roy Putnam, a son of Russell Lankford Putnam and Mary Elizabeth Brown and was born in Bath County Virginia November 27, 1914. He was at home in Alleghany County Virginia in 1930 and married Dorothy there October 10, 1931. They were in Jefferson County Ohio in 1935 and then here. He works for Baker Lumber as a timber man. Dorothy was born July 29, 1911 and will die in Vienna, Virginia October 21, 1977. Edgar will die in Pinellas, Florida March 15, 1991. New England family.

WEST VIRGINIA 1950 CENSUS
In the
1940 census and especially now in the 1950 Census, the handwriting on the
sheets is a bit better. But now that people are using Ancestry and Family
Search and putting their family trees up on the sites, and the sites themselves
have much better search engines and send you to a whole bunch of info docs and
records. I now can find a family sheet on about everyone and many on the wife’s
side. When I first started doing this in the very early 1970s, all that was
available to see was up to the 1900. There was no such thing as on-line and the
computers then were the size of a locker room. I had to drive out to Waltham,
Massachusetts to the U. S. Library, beg for a film real of the dates and State
I wanted and then look at it through a visual device in a back dark room and
literally go page to page, county to county and write the info down on paper
with a pencil. At that time, really the most people doing genealogy were older
women, mostly retired school teachers in their 70s and 80s, who would send you
hand written trees and info and stuff that they had back a couple of
generations. Once in a while I would get an actual typewritten document. Wow!
Got much better in the 1990s. Now it is soooo easy to get info you didn’t think
was possible. Back in the 70s I tried calling folks, and got a hold of several
who had info. Now just an e-mail can bring in a ton of info. Anyway, really
enjoy these censuses, and if you can add or correct, please let me know so I
can help others.

Flora Putman and was born out of wedlock like several others in the family of

County October 28, 1902 and will die in Gassaway, Braxton County February 7,
1967. He married Louvina Jane Dobbins April 9, 1939. She is a daughter of
Albert Walker Dobbins and Sarah Shock. She was born in Gilmer County West
Virginia October 4, 1918 and will die in Barbour County West Virginia March 16,

Catherine Dully from Braxton County. He is a twin of Martin Fletcher here in
town. He was born April 2, 1892 and married Eliza December 9, 1912. He will die in the Massillon State Hospital in

Ann is a daughter of Elijah and Samantha Lipscomb and was born August 16, 1908,
and will die in Parkersburg April 16, 1992. This is part of the New England
family of John Putnam who came down to Bath County Virginia in the Revolution

November 1949. Hadsyl is a son of James William Putnam and Bertha Mae Conrad
from here. He was born here January 23, 1918 and will die in Gilmer County
March 6, 1999 and be buried in the Putnam Cemetery in Braxton County. Oleta was
born in 1918 and will die in Ohio in 2100. They divorced or split as he will
marry Patty Jane Radcliff in Gilmer County on July 4, 1968

Alberta Kelley is 24 OH and they have Ruth Ann 5 WV, Alvie 3 WV, Louisa G. 2
WV, Thomas 1 WV and Billie R. born November 1949. He is a son of Thomas Cole
Putman and Mallie Eldridge and was born in Lower Creek, Caldwell County North
Carolina September 16, 1913 and will die in Mansfield, Ohio December 17, 1969.
He and Etta were married here in 1943. Now, the interesting stuff. Found a
couple of family sheets for him. He was born in Kentucky in November 1871 and
was a son of Renson and Elmyra Pittman from Tennessee. In 1880 he is at home
with them in Morgan County Tennessee and listed as Pittman. Now it seems he has
taken on the spelling of the Putmans here in North Carolina. Wataugua County is
on the northwest border of North Carolina and is on the border of northeast
Tennessee. Obviously couldn’t write and his name was transcribed as it sounded.
That’s how my Putnam name got changed to Putman in Virginia in the 1650s. He
will die in Lower Creek, Caldwell County February 25, 1942. He married Mollie
in 1898. She was a daughter of John Andrew Chambers and Plutina C. Eldridge.
She was born in December 1875 in Wilkes County North Carolina and will die in Morgantown,
Burke County North Carolina February 15, 1932. The name has remained Putman
ever since. Been in touch with descendants. Now Clay was lodging in Rutherford
County, North Carolina in the 1940 and spelled his name as Pitman, but it’s
clearly spelled Putman here in 1950. So… not born as Putmans, but kinda
self-adopted as Putmans.
F. R. (FRED ROCHES) PUTNAM West Logan, Logan County
He is 50 NC and his Rhoda Jeffrey 39 WV and they have Fred Richard 9 WV. He is an engine supply man for the C & O Railway. They were here in 1930 and living with her folks then. He is a son of John Samuel Putman and Laura Agnes Hux and was born in April 1899 in Gaston County North Carolina. His dad deserted his mom and he was with her in 1920 in Edgecombe County North Carolina. He married Frances Shelton November 25, 1928 in Peach Creek, Logan County. He was married twice, first to Frances and then to Rhoda. There are two daughters from her prior marriage to Don Ferrell, Nellina Ferrell 16 WV and Mary Jean Ferrell 14 WV. Southern Putmans of course.
LEONARD PUTNAM Fairmont, Marion

He is 48 VA and
his wife Nellie Price is 54 WV. Her mom
Zana Price 89 WV is with them now. Leonard Gay Putnam is a son of Winfield
Vance Putnam and his first wife Minnie Shelton from Bath County Virginia. Len
was born February 8, 1901 and will die here September 9, 1974. He married Nellie Merle Price in Marion County October
19, 1922. She was a daughter of Isaias Wesley Price and Zana Belle Hughes and
was born in Lyon, Preston County West Virginia March 12, 1896 and will die in
Fairmont, Marion County October 20, 1981. They were in Fairmont in 1930. He now
is a part owner of a grocery store. New England family way back.
LULA D. (DEY) PUTNAM Fairmont, Marion County
She is 67 WV and widowed. Lula Dey
Accord was married to Robert William Putnam here since they were married in
1910. He was a
son of Charles Francisco Putnam and Agnes Keziah Rowe from Bath County
Virginia. He was single in Allegheny County, Virginia in 1900. They were here
in 1910 and on. He was born in Bath County Virginia November 8, 1876 and died
in a railroad accident January 9, 1943. He married Lula January 21, 1901. Lula was a daughter of Andrew
Jackson Acord Jr. and Emma Susan Makie Herron and was born April 2, 1883
and will die November 19, 1972. New England line originally from Massachusetts
to Bath County Virginia to here.
CHARLES W. (WILLIAM)
PUTNAM Wheeling, Ohio County
He
is 55 PA and his wife Esther R. Douglas 49 WV. He used to manage a bowling
alley but now is a helper in lithology. He is a son of Peter Putnam and Minnie Lubbe and was born in Pittsburgh November 10, 1895. He
and Esther were married here in 1936.
LORIN THOMAS PUTMAN Beckley, Raleigh County
He is
actually listed as Loxia F. Great handwriting! He is Lorin and has been here.
He is 62 MO MO MO, his wife Sarah Ann is 62 IL and they have a maid, Katie
Jackson 20 WV. He is a son of Thomas Benton Putman and Mary Jane Meyers from
Greene County Missouri. He was born there August 22, 1886 and was at home in
1900. They were in Franklin County Illinois in 1910 and 1920 and he was a
supervisor in a coalmine. They were here in Beckley in 1930 and 1940. He is now
a general manager of several coalmines. Loren will die here February 17, 1967
and Sarah will die here October 28, 1968. Southern Putman family North Carolina

She is
63 WV and separated from her husband. Alta May Hardman was married to Charles
Turner Putnam here from before the 1910 census till after the 1940. Charles is
a son of Charles Francisco Putnam and Agnes Keziah Rowe. He was born back in
Bath County Virginia and then was with his folks in Ritchie County West
Virginia by 1900. He was born February 7, 1883. Alta was born January 1, 1887
and will die Grafton Taylor County in December 1972. New England line.

51 WV WV WV and his wife Charlotte (Lottie) Wilson his wife, is 42 WV and they
have Ruth Carol 20 WV, Betty 19 WV and Deloris 16 W9V. He works at a factory.
Roy Lee Putman is a son of Charles L. Putman and Maude Youst from Gilmer
County. He was born in Gilmer County February 1, 1900. He was at home there in
1920 and married here ever since. He married Lottie back in Gilmer County
January 24, 1926. He was born February 1, 1900 and will die in June 1983.
